UPDF Recruitment: Requirements and How to Apply
UPDF recruitment requirements: age limits, UCE and UACE grades, LC and RDC recommendations, the online portal, documents and scam warnings.
By Paul Omondi, Founder & CTO · Updated
To join the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) you must be an adult Ugandan citizen with a valid National ID, physically and medically fit, with no criminal record, recommended by your local leaders, and within the age and education limits of the category you apply for. You apply online first, and only shortlisted applicants report for physical recruitment.
The details below come from the UPDF's official notice for the 2026 General Recruitment Exercise, published on updf.go.ug in June 2026. Each exercise is announced separately, so check the current notice before applying - the categories and limits can change.
General eligibility
Every applicant must:
- Be an adult Ugandan citizen with a valid National Identification Card.
- Be physically and medically fit, and ready to undergo the required tests.
- Be law-abiding, with no criminal record.
- Have an application signed by the LCI, LCII and LCIII chairpersons, the GISO or DISO, and the Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
- Apply in the area where they live - recruitment quotas for each city and district are based on the 2024 National Population and Housing Census.

For the UACE sciences category, the A-level subjects must be core sciences: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing or Agriculture. Notice that general recruits must have sat UCE or UACE in the two most recent years - older certificates did not qualify in 2026.
How the recruitment works
The 2026 exercise ran in three phases. Future exercises are likely to follow the same pattern, with new dates:
- Online application (10 to 24 June 2026). Apply on the official portal at recruitment.updf.go.ug and upload a passport photo, your academic documents and your National ID.
- Shortlist and display (1 to 14 July 2026). The shortlist is published on the UPDF website and displayed at each city and district headquarters.
- Physical recruitment (20 July to 1 August 2026). Shortlisted applicants report individually to their assigned recruitment centre for physical and medical interviews.
Successful applicants receive an introduction card, which they present when they report to the training centre on the given date.
What shortlisted applicants must bring
- A handwritten application bearing recommendations from the LCI, LCII, LCIII and the GISO or DISO.
- Your National ID card or NIN.
- Originals and copies of your academic documents. Graduate documents must be certified.
- Three coloured passport-size photographs.
UPDF recruitment is free. Nobody can sell you a place, a shortlist slot or an introduction card. If someone asks you for money to be recruited, report them to the police. Use only the UPDF's official channels: the website updf.go.ug, and the UPDF directorate of public information on 0414-565346 or ddpi@updf.go.ug.
How to prepare
- Check your year of sitting. The 2026 exercise only accepted UCE and UACE from 2024 or 2025 for general recruits. If yours is older, look at the professional categories instead.
- Collect your recommendations early. Getting signatures from your LC chairpersons, GISO or DISO and the RDC takes time. Start as soon as an exercise is announced.
- Make sure your NIN matches your certificates. Your name should be spelled the same way on your National ID and your UCE or UACE certificates.
- Get fit. Physical and medical interviews decide who is enlisted.
If the UPDF is not the right route for you, the Uganda Police Force recruits UCE holders too - see Uganda Police recruitment - and our guide to jobs for S6 and S4 vacists covers other first jobs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the age limit for UPDF recruitment?+
In the 2026 general recruitment exercise, general recruits had to be aged between 18 and 22. ICT personnel had to be below 25, and engineering and logistics personnel below 30 (degree holders) or below 28 (diploma and certificate holders).
What grades do I need to join the UPDF?+
For the 2026 exercise, regular forces needed a UCE obtained in 2024 or 2025, or a UACE from 2024 or 2025 with at least two principal passes - a minimum of 10 points for arts combinations or 8 points for sciences, in a single sitting.
How do I apply for UPDF recruitment?+
Apply online through the official UPDF recruitment portal at recruitment.updf.go.ug during the application window, uploading a passport photo, academic documents and your national ID. Shortlisted applicants then report in person for physical and medical interviews.

Yes. Applications must be signed by your LCI, LCII and LCIII chairpersons, the GISO or DISO, and the Resident District Commissioner, and you must apply in the area where you live.
Do I pay to join the UPDF?+
No. Joining the UPDF does not cost money. Anyone who asks you to pay to be recruited or shortlisted is a fraudster - report them to the police.
Never pay for a job
Real employers never ask candidates for money - not for an application, an interview, training or a medical. On Cazini, an employer who asks is suspended. If anyone asks you to pay, report it to info@cazini.co.ke.
