Uganda Police Recruitment: Requirements
Uganda Police recruitment requirements for probationer constables: age, UCE grades, documents, how to apply and how to spot fake police adverts.
By Paul Omondi, Founder & CTO · Updated
To join the Uganda Police Force as a probationer police constable (PPC), you must be a Ugandan citizen with a valid National ID, have no criminal record, be physically and medically fit, hold a UCE certificate with the required credits, and be within the age limit in the current notice. Applications are handwritten, delivered to your police district or divisional headquarters, and recruitment is free.
The details below come from the Uganda Police Force's own notices on upf.go.ug: the February 2024 recruitment of 2,500 PPCs and the March 2025 recruitment of 10,000 PPCs. Each recruitment is announced separately, so always check the current notice before you apply.
Minimum requirements
The March 2025 notice required every applicant to:
- Be a Ugandan citizen with a valid National ID, or a Confirmation of Information on the Register letter from NIRA.
- Have no criminal record.
- Be ready to undertake police basic training (the 2024 notice gave it as twelve months).
- Be physically and medically fit.
- Be ready to work long hours, at times under difficult conditions, in any part of the country.
- Have good communication skills.
- Not be a serving or former officer in another force.
The February 2024 notice set the age limit at 18 to 23 years, with entry on the U7 salary scale.
Education requirements
The March 2025 notice required a UCE certificate (or equivalent) obtained in a sitting not earlier than 2020, with:
| Grading system | Minimum results |
|---|---|
| Traditional grading | At least four credits, including English or Mathematics, and at least a pass in the other |
| Competency-based grading | At least four C's, including English or Mathematics, and at least a D in the other |

The same notice said that people with higher academic qualifications should not apply for PPC posts, that a valid driving permit is an added advantage, and that female candidates are encouraged to apply.
How to apply
In the 2025 recruitment, applicants delivered a hand-written application addressed to the Inspector General of Police, in a file folder, to the Police District or Divisional Headquarters where they live. The folder contained:
- Photocopies of academic documents.
- A photocopy of the National Identity Card.
- Three recent passport-size photographs.
- A school identity card or an introductory letter from the applicant's previous school.
- Recommendation letters from the LCI, LCIII and the RDC of the district of residence.
Applications had to arrive before the deadline in the notice (21 March 2025 for that round). The notice also warned that impersonation or forged documents lead to arrest and prosecution, and that anyone who hides or gives false information is disqualified.
Police recruitment is free at every stage. The Uganda Police Force tells applicants not to pay any money to anyone for any service during recruitment, and warns that impersonation or forged documents lead to arrest and prosecution.
Short-term posts: election special police constables
Around general elections the force also recruits election special police constables on short contracts. In October 2025 it advertised over 100,000 posts for three months, paying UGX 469,000 a month, with work in the applicant's own district. The minimum education was a Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) result slip, applicants had to be 18 or older and registered voters in their area, and they underwent a one-month basic security course. Applications were handwritten to the IGP, with LCI, LCIII and GISO recommendations, delivered to the police district or divisional headquarters.
These are temporary posts, not entry into the regular force, but they are one of the few police roles open to applicants without UCE.
How to spot a fake police recruitment advert
Fake police adverts spread on WhatsApp and Facebook, especially around elections. Fact-checkers at Africa Check have confirmed, for example, that a circulating advert for "polling constables" was not from the Uganda Police Force. Before you act on any advert:
- Find it on upf.go.ug or the Uganda Police Force's official social media accounts. If it is not there, treat it as fake.
- Check the reference number and deadline against the official notice.
- Never pay for forms, shortlisting, medicals or training places.
- Deliver your application yourself to the police district or divisional headquarters named in the notice - not to an "agent".
Preparing your application
- Get your National ID sorted first. It is a must-have requirement. If you have registered but not received your card, get the NIRA confirmation letter.
- Check your UCE year and results against the notice before you collect anything else.
- Collect your recommendations early. LCI, LCIII and RDC letters take time.
- Write neatly. Your application is handwritten - make it clear, signed, and include your phone number. See how to write an application letter in Uganda.
