Jobs for S6 and S4 Vacists in Uganda
Jobs and paths open to S6 and S4 vacists in Uganda - first jobs, UPDF and police entry, vocational courses - plus how to avoid vacation job scams.
By Paul Omondi, Founder & CTO · Updated
The months after S6 or S4 are a good time to earn money, gain experience and build skills before university or college. Uganda's vacists most often find work in retail, hospitality, sales, mobile money and office support, and some go straight into the UPDF or Uganda Police if they meet the current notice. The key is to start early, carry your documents, and avoid the scams aimed at school leavers.
First jobs that hire vacists
| Job | What you usually need | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Shop or supermarket attendant, cashier | Basic maths, honesty, good manners | Walk in with your CV; ask at supermarkets and wholesalers |
| Waiter, waitress, hotel and restaurant work | Good communication, neat presentation | Hotels, restaurants and event caterers, especially in the holiday season |
| Sales and product promotion | Confidence, a phone, willingness to walk | Brand promotions, telecom and FMCG distributors |
| Mobile money or agent banking attendant | Basic maths, a National ID, references | Agent shops and supermarkets |
| Data entry and office assistant | Computer skills | Offices, schools, clinics, NGOs |
| Call centre agent | Clear spoken English and a local language | Telecom and outsourcing companies |
| Family or community business | Willingness to learn | Farms, shops, salons, workshops |
Many of these jobs are never advertised online. Visit businesses near you with a printed CV, tell relatives and teachers you are looking, and follow up politely a week later.
Joining the UPDF
The UPDF recruits general recruits aged 18 to 22. In the 2026 exercise, it accepted:
- A UCE obtained in 2024 or 2025, or
- A UACE from 2024 or 2025 with at least two principal passes and 10 points (arts) or 8 points (sciences) in a single sitting.
You apply online during the application window, with recommendations from your LCI, LCII, LCIII chairpersons, the GISO or DISO and the RDC. See the full UPDF recruitment requirements.
Joining the Uganda Police
The Uganda Police Force recruits probationer police constables from UCE holders. The March 2025 notice asked for a UCE from 2020 or later, with at least four credits including English or Mathematics, and stated that people with higher academic qualifications should not apply - so this route suits S4 leavers rather than S6 vacists. See Uganda Police recruitment.
Learn a skill while you wait
A short practical course can turn vacation work into a career. Vocational institutes across Uganda offer courses such as:
- Computer applications and data entry
- Tailoring and fashion design
- Hairdressing and beauty
- Motor vehicle mechanics and electrical installation
- Catering and hotel services
- Driving (for a driving permit, which also helps police and many private job applications)
Choose a recognised institution and ask whether the course leads to a nationally recognised assessment or certificate.
Planning university or tertiary studies
If you plan to continue, use your vacation to research courses and admission requirements, apply on time for government sponsorship and private admission, and save towards fees and accommodation. Work experience from your vacation also strengthens scholarship and internship applications later.
Get your documents ready
- National ID - most employers and every government recruitment need it.
- UCE and UACE result slips or certificates, with copies.
- A one-page CV listing your education, school leadership, clubs, sports, volunteering and any skills - see how to write a CV in Uganda.
- Recommendation letters from your LC chairperson or a teacher, which some employers ask for.
Avoid vacation job scams
School leavers are targeted every year. Walk away if anyone:
- Asks you to pay for an application, interview, uniform, "training" or a "placement".
- Promises a job abroad without a licensed company - see licensed recruitment companies in Uganda.
- Asks you to pay to join and then recruit friends (a pyramid scheme, not a job).
- Offers "online jobs" where you deposit money to unlock earnings.
Real employers pay you. They do not charge you.

Frequently asked questions
What jobs can S6 vacists do in Uganda?+
Common jobs for S6 vacists include shop and supermarket attendant, waiter or waitress, hotel and restaurant work, sales and product promotion, mobile money agent attendant, data entry and office assistance, call centre work, and working in a family or local business. Many are found through walk-ins and referrals.
Can S6 vacists join the UPDF?+
Yes, if they meet the current notice. The 2026 UPDF exercise accepted general recruits aged 18 to 22 with a UACE from 2024 or 2025 - at least two principal passes and 10 points for arts or 8 points for sciences, in one sitting.
Can S4 leavers join the Uganda Police?+
Probationer police constable recruitment is aimed at UCE holders. The March 2025 notice asked for a UCE obtained in 2020 or later with at least four credits, and said people with higher qualifications should not apply.
Should I pay for a vacation job?+
No. Genuine employers do not charge for applications, interviews, uniforms or training. A job that asks you to pay first is a scam.
Never pay for a job
Real employers never ask candidates for money - not for an application, an interview, training or a medical. On Cazini, an employer who asks is suspended. If anyone asks you to pay, report it to info@cazini.co.ke.
