KDF Recruitment: Requirements and How to Apply

KDF recruitment requirements by category: age, KCSE grades, height, weight, documents, where to apply and how to avoid fake recruitment agents.

By Paul Omondi, Founder & CTO · Updated

To join the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) you must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid national ID and no criminal record, be within the age limit for your category, meet the minimum height, weight and medical standards, and hold the KCSE grade your category requires. Recruitment is free: nobody can sell you a place.

The figures below come from KDF's most recent official advert, published by the Ministry of Defence in September 2025 for the October 2025 drive. KDF publishes a new advert for every drive, so always check the current one before you travel to a recruitment centre.

The five recruitment categories

KDF recruits into five categories, and the requirements differ for each:

  • General Duty Recruits - the largest intake, recruited in person at centres across the country.
  • General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets - future commissioned officers, in two tracks: Regular (from KCSE) and Graduate (degree holders).
  • Specialist Officers - qualified professionals such as doctors, engineers, lawyers and chaplains.
  • Tradesmen and tradeswomen - diploma and certificate holders in trades such as mechanics, electrical work, ICT, catering and tailoring.
  • Defence Forces Constables - open only to retired KDF service members and retired NYS servicemen and women.

Specialist officers and tradesmen also need at least two years of practice after registering with their professional body.

Height, weight and medical standards

  • Minimum height: men 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in), women 1.52 m (5 ft).
  • Minimum weight: men 54.55 kg (120 lb), women 50 kg (110 lb).
  • Body Mass Index (BMI): must be below 30.
  • Medical: you must be medically fit to KDF standards. Women must not be pregnant at recruitment or during training.

Documents to bring

Bring your originals and four copies of each of these:

  1. National ID card
  2. KRA PIN certificate
  3. Academic certificates (KCSE certificate and result slip, plus any certificate, diploma or degree your category needs)

Shortlisted candidates in every category go through a final verification of documents at KDF training institutions, so carry the same originals there too.

How to apply

GSO cadets, specialist officers and tradesmen apply online at recruit.mod.go.ke. Applications are online only. In 2025 the deadline was 12 October, and shortlisted candidates were named in the print media between 21 and 24 October.

General Duty Recruits and Defence Forces Constables do not apply online. KDF recruiting teams from the Army, Air Force and Navy visit a recruitment centre in each sub-county on a published date. You go to the centre for your sub-county, with your documents, on that date. In the 2025 drive the Nairobi centres were Jamhuri Grounds, Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium, and the drive ran from 13 to 25 October.

Recruitment is free. KDF's advert says that bribery or any other corruption meant to influence recruitment is a criminal offence and offenders will be arrested and prosecuted. Report anyone asking for money to the nearest police station or military camp, or on 0726419706 / 0726419709.

How to avoid fake KDF recruitment adverts

Fake posters and "agents" appear before every drive. Rely only on KDF's own channels:

  • Website: mod.go.ke
  • X (Twitter): @kdfinfo
  • Facebook: @officialkdf
  • Instagram: @kdf.info
  • TikTok: @kdf_officialpage

Be suspicious of anyone who promises a "guaranteed slot", asks for a "registration fee", or contacts you privately about recruitment. KDF's advert says the drive is free and open to every eligible candidate, so anyone selling a place is committing a crime, not offering a shortcut.

Preparing for recruitment day

  • Get fit early. Every candidate goes through physical and medical checks against KDF's standards, so train well before the drive.
  • Check your documents. The name on your ID, KCSE certificate and KRA PIN should match. Fix mismatches before the drive.
  • Get your KRA PIN in advance. You can register for free on iTax. See our guide to Chapter Six clearance certificates for other documents government employers ask for.
  • Arrive early at your sub-county centre on the published date, with your originals and copies.

If you do not make it this time, other routes into a disciplined service or a first job are open to KCSE holders - see jobs for form four leavers in Kenya.
